Sarasota-area waters offer an abundance of angling delights

The captain spotted the school of tarpon swimming parallel to the beach, 100 yards from shore.

"Wait until I give the signal to cast," he told the angler. "You may only get one chance."

The large, thick-bodied fish, often referred to as "the silver king of game fish," run south along local beaches every spring. But for some reason, the tarpon linger a little longer in the shallow waters off this barrier island.

Meet the Shark Brothers of North Port: Sean and Brooks Paxton

At a young age, brothers Sean and Brooks Paxton became enamored, actually obsessed, with sharks after watching the 1975 blockbuster movie JAWS. The film depicts a coastal New England town terrorized by a great white shark that is hunted down by a sheriff, a marine biologist and a crusty boat captain.

The renowned 12-mile bicycle trail from Venice to Sarasota is a great place to connect with nature, get exercise and enjoy all that Florida has to offer

In November, 1911, the Seaboard Air Line Railway started carrying passengers from Sarasota to Venice via an extension. In 1927, the Venice Train Depot was built, drawing even more folks who were anxious to live in the Venice area, establish businesses, and simply enjoy the coastal community.
