The Fabulous Independent Film Festival puts a fill light on diversity
From August 22 to 24, the Fabulous Independent Film Festival at Burns Court Cinemas in downtown Sarasota honors diversity in the community with three days of some of the best independent cinema in the world.
From August 22 to 24, the Fabulous Independent Film Festival at Burns Court Cinemas in downtown Sarasota honors diversity in the community with three days of some of the best independent cinema in the world.
In the past few years Sarasota County has notably risen its reputation as a welcoming place for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender visitors, in large part thanks to the growing popularity of festivals such as the Harvey Milk Festival, Pride Fest and the Fabulous Independent Film Festival.
Slated to press play August 22 to 24 at Burns Court Cinemas in downtown Sarasota, the Fabulous Independent Film Festival celebrates this cultural diversity with some of the best independent cinema in the world.
Tickets festival films are $8.50 per film, and $10 for opening and closing night films. In addition to movie screenings, the festival also features an opening night cocktail party at M.A.D.E. 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 and a opening night dance party at THROB thereafter. The closing night party is 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Caragiulos.

FRIDAY:
Blackbird – opening film
When: 7:30 p.m.
About: The opening festival film, Blackbird begins with an adaptation from Larry Duplechan's novel of the same name. The film follows a highschool student navigating through a non-traditional Romeo & Juliet relationship and a reconciliation with his long-absent father.

SATURDAY
Born To Fly
When: 1:15 p.m.
About: A postmodern dance combined with Evel Knievel. This film is a portrait of New York choreographer Elizabeth Streb and her Extreme Action Company that combines high-flying feats with contemporary dance.

The Circle
When: 3:15 p.m.
About: The Circle is a true tale of Switzerland's 1940s to 60s magazine of the same name and the network of friends and lovers formed around it.

Boy Meets Girl
When: 5:45 p.m.
About: A sexy, funny, coming-of-age comedy about three 20-somethings living in Kentucky. This film captures "non-traditional" love in a small town.
FEATURE:
Queerituality
When: 8 p.m.
About: Tom Murray's last film, with Gaylon Emerzian from Chicago completing the editing. A labor of love for Tom, this screening is a world premiere and will conclude his beautiful cinematographic journey.

About: A warm, funny film about teenage love and friendship. The story of a blind boy named leo and his best friend Giovana

About: A dry comedy about a semi-closeted bisexual Persian American that tries to live up to her family's ideal and traditions while going through a breakup.
