Enjoy a revamped lineup of shows this season from dozens of companies, galleries and theaters eager to dazzle audiences
The Sarasota arts scene has perservered to host a revamped lineup of concerts, talks, performances... even yoga classes! This busy fall and winter season is filled with events designed with careful attention to guest safety while the world continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. These in-person shows complement a whole host of virtual events that also will take place so anyone can enjoy some of their favorite companies from a distance.
Read on for more details about in-person arts events in Sarasota this fall and winter. All event dates and times are subject to change, so always double check in advance to make sure these events are still scheduled to occur as originally planned.

45th Anniversary Orchid Show

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the official opening of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. To celebrate, the annual Orchid Show will honor the founder, Marie Selby, and highlight the accomplishments of the many notable women who have built on her legacy and helped to make Selby Gardens home to the best scientifically documented collection of orchids in the world.
The year the land for Selby Gardens was purchased was a momentous one in women’s history. The dynamic display in the Tropical Conservatory will celebrate the Suffrage Movement and the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. The orchid celebration in the Tropical Conservatory will feature the symbolic colors of the Suffragettes, which include purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, green for hope, and gold for light and life.
An additional orchid display will be included at Selby Gardens’ companion campus at Historic Spanish Point. The display will connect to Bertha Palmer, the famous Chicago socialite and philanthropist who established a winter estate at Spanish Point in 1910. Through her work as Chairman of the Board of Lady Managers at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, Bertha Palmer made significant contributions to the cause of women’s rights, which culminated in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
Classical Accordionist Hanzhi Wang

Organizer: Artist Series Concerts
Enjoy an interview and a lunch with accordionist Hanzhi Wang, the first accordionist to win a spot on the Young Concert Artists’ Series roster in its 60-year history. Wang has prepared and recorded a recital video that will be shown during the event, as she will be in Denmark. The performance and interview will began at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. Tickets are $53. The event also will be streamed live.

Join hundreds of singers from around the country to learn and sing Songs of Protest, Peace & Love, including music from the 1950s and 1960s folk era, such as “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “California Dreamin’.” Learn 11 songs from unisons to four parts, warm ups, and vocal exercises to improve your breath and singing ability. The rehearsal will also be available on the Key Chorale YouTube channel afterwards.
Women of Note: A Celebration of Female Composers of the 19th and 20th Centuries

The Artist Series Concerts will collaborate with Florida Studio Theatre’s Suffragist Project for an online artist celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote, celebrating 100 years in 2020. The all-female quartet, which include Artist Series Concerts co-founder Lee Dougherty Ross, will perform pieces by Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Alma Mahler and Amy Beach and others.

The Ringling has designed a dynamic line-up of live, conversational, virtual programs you can enjoy from anywhere! Tickets will be available 30 days prior to each program, and only one ticket is required per household regardless of how many will be watching. Model Circus, explore scary and creepy works in the museum’s collection, and ask The Ringling’s masterful curators questions live among other unique online experiences.

These digital experiences will replace in-theater performances for the first three programs of the 30th Anniversary Season. Visions of the Black Experience Film Festival

Host: Sarasota Film Festival
The second annual Visions of the Black Experience film series celebrates and illuminates the historical, social, and cultural aspects of black life through film. The program includes a unique selection of previously made documentaries, narrative films, and shorts, as well as new works by emerging filmmakers. Live Q&A’s with filmmakers, panel discussions, and educational opportunities will offer a deeper exploration of the themes of the festival. Themes that will be explored this year will include films by and for youth and young adults, black health and healthcare, and Afrofuturism. While organized in Sarasota, Florida, the online format will allow us to engage audiences locally and around the world.
This year’s Visions showcases over 30 features and narrative and documentary shorts, including local and international films focused on vital themes like social justice, healthcare in the black community, police brutality, and more. The feature program includes a Chadwick Boseman retrospective, with the films 42 and GET ON UP, locally-made films 9/11 KIDS, INTO THE STORM, THROUGH THE TUNNEL, and SINCERELY, THE BLACK KIDS, acclaimed festival selections PAHOKEE and AMERICAN TRIAL: THE STORY OF ERIC GARNER, and many more.

"Bach" Together Again, Bach & Vivaldi

Key Chorale chamber singers combine with orchestra for two of the most festive Baroque works: Bach’s Magnificat and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Trumpet, timpani and jubilant choral writing is ever present in Bach’s Magnificat, his first large-scale work composed for the churches in Leipzig. Vivaldi’s spiritual magnificence and Italian mastery make his Gloria his greatest choral masterpiece. After its premiere, it will be available online for three weeks. Tickets are $30.

The Venice Symphony offered virtual series through the summer, all of which can be found on its website and on its YouTube channel. It also has a 10-episode series called Education Spotlight and a Behind the Baton monthly interview series available virtually. In 2021, the symphony also will offer online “The Venice Symphony Fanfare and a Quidditch Match” and “The Venice Symphony Resound, Resilience,” with dates to be determined.
