Myakka State Forest

Venture farther south and land in Myakka State Forest, an 8.6-acre flatwood forest offering camping opportunities that even locals don't widely know about. Not to be confused with Myakka River State Park, these public lands take up a large portion of North Port and Englewood, with the namesake river flowing through the northeast portion of the forest. In addition to 40 miles of trails open to hiking, trail biking and horseback riding, the forest contains a primitive campground.
Though there are no RV spots for you to park your home-on-wheels, you can pitch a tent under Florida's night sky in one of the hike-in or paddle-in campsites dispersed around the waterways. And Englewood's white-sand beaches are a short drive away for a daytime activity.
Camping for organized groups is available by permit, which can be obtained from the Myakka State Forest office.
