Visit Sarasota County (VSC) announces the appointment of Hunter Carpenter, APR, as the Director of Partnership and Community Relations. Carpenter will oversee the organization’s relationships with local businesses by connecting them with opportunities the VSC team offers to showcase their own offerings to visitors around the world.

The Sarasota Sharks, in partnership with Visit Sarasota County , will host their 2024 Sharks Open at the Selby Aquatic Center June 20-23rd. Sanctioned by USA Swimming, this preliminary/finals event will lure over 500 young competitors and visitors from across the U.S. and Canada for a chance to see and experience Sarasota County, while competing for gold during the Sharks’ annual meet.

Tucked away between the lapping shores of Sarasota Bay and the charming, yet growing, downtown sector lies a cultural hub long shaped by the city’s Black pioneers and residents — the historic community of Newtown.

Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 2024, Newtown is home to regional trailblazers like Sarasota’s first Black mayor Fredd Atkins. It’s where former Negro Baseball League legend John ‘Buck’ O’Neil grew up and is the home of the descendants of former Civil Rights leaders who helped to desegregate Lido Beach.
