Ashley Ciferno, of the Fermented Vegan, will be leading two classes on fermentation at Manatee Village Historical Park on August 23 and 24.

Fermentation 101, taking place on Saturday, August 24, will allow participants to learn the ancient technique of fermentation that preserves your food, transforms flavors, and provides essential bacteria and nutrients. In this workshop, Ciferno will focus on sauerkraut. Participants will learn the simple fermentation process, the Do’s and Don’ts, and get to snack on some fermented veggies.

Two identical Making Vegan Cheese classes will be offered—one on Friday, August 23 and one on Saturday, August 24. Participants will learn the process of making raw, vegan cheese from start to finish. They will combine nuts and seeds, starter cultures, and their own unique flavorings, and successfully form and age beautiful, artisan cheese. Ciferno says, “Come ready to taste, ask questions, get involved, and take home a starter of your own cheese.”

Ciferno has been fermenting food for almost ten years and transitioned to a plant-based diet in 2017. She says: "We have so much to learn and appreciate in this life, and it is my pleasure to educate, support and inspire people on their own, exciting journey!"

Fermentation 101 will take place on Saturday, August 24 at 10:00am. Making Vegan Cheese will take place on Friday, August 23 or Saturday, August 24 at 2:00pm.

Tickets are $25. They may be purchased online at or by calling Manatee Village staff at (941) 749-7165.

Manatee Village has eight sets of assisted listening devices available for use during the talk on a first come, first served basis.
