With a rich legacy steeped in passion, precision and a global reputation that precedes it, The Sarasota Ballet is one of America’s leading Ballet companies.
From enchanting audiences with rare ballet gems to pioneering digital innovation in the face of adversity, The Sarasota Ballet continues to redefine the boundaries of artistic expression and the power of dance—on and off the stage.
Behind the Curtain: National & International Reputation
The Sarasota Ballet is revered both nationally and internationally for its diversity of movement and dedication to excellence. And it’s easy to see why. The Company’s commitment to captivate emotions and strengthen the community through the art of dance has not wavered since its inception in 1987.
Founded by Jean Weidner Goldstein as a presenting organization, The Sarasota Ballet became a full resident ballet company in 1990 with the appointment of the Company’s first Director, Montreal-based choreographer Eddy Toussaint.
After Toussaint, Robert de Warren, the former Director of Ballet at Teatro alla Scala Milan and Northern Ballet, assumed the role of Artistic Director for 13 years. During his tenure, de Warren choreographed 24 ballets, including works like Madam Butterfly and Last Call: The Dance.
By 2007, Iain Webb would take the helm as Director following de Warren’s retirement. That first Season would revolutionize The Sarasota Ballet and set the Company on a path to both national and international recognition. Heavily inspired by his career with The Royal Ballet and combined with his close personal relationships with some of the biggest names in the dance world, Webb has brought extraordinary ballets to the Sarasota stage by some of the great choreographers of the 20th century. Together with his wife and Assistant Director, Margaret Barbieri, Webb has introduced over 180 new ballets into the repertoire.
From Stage to Screen: 2020-2021 Digital Season
Amidst unprecedented times, The Sarasota Ballet seamlessly transitioned into the digital realm, captivating thousands of audience members across 30 countries during its 2020-2021 "Digital Season." Through virtual performances, the Company extended its reach far beyond geographical boundaries, embodying a commitment to accessibility and innovation, ensuring that the beauty of ballet transcends physical limitations.
International Touring: London 2024
In a historic milestone, The Sarasota Ballet proudly announced its inaugural international tour to London, gracing the esteemed stage of The Royal Opera House. This momentous occasion comes as a result of an invitation extended by none other than Kevin O’Hare, the visionary director of The Royal Ballet, marking a significant testament to the Company's global impact and acclaim.
