The Sanctuary Documentary Screening

The Sanctuary Weekend is a free, two-day community gathering focused on healing, advocacy, and belonging for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies.

The weekend begins on Saturday, January 17 at 6PM with a screening of The Sanctuary Documentary, a feature-length film exploring the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals navigating faith systems that have often failed to see them fully. Told through the eyes of visionary architect Doug, the documentary follows a passion project that becomes a refuge of hope and dignity. What began as a personal journey to better understand and honor family members grew into a national movement, with the Sanctuary traveling to Pride festivals across the country in 2024.

The screening will be followed by a live QandA with Co-Director and Producer Autumn McAlpin and Co-Director, Cinematographer, and Editor Vienna Boyes, offering audiences the opportunity to engage directly with the filmmakers and explore the stories behind the film.

On Sunday, January 18 at 10AM, the weekend continues with a special appearance by Paula Stone Williams, an internationally-known speaker, author, and advocate for inclusion. Williams has been featured by TEDWomen, TEDSummit, the New York Times, NPR, CNN, ABC News, PBS, and more. Her talk will focus on identity, authenticity, and creating spaces where all people are fully welcomed and valued.

The Sanctuary Weekend takes place at The Harvest, located at 3650 17th Street in Sarasota. The event is open to the public and intentionally designed to be a welcoming and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, faith leaders, community members, and allies.
