HuMangrove by Tania Vergara Dance-Theater
April 25, 2026 See All DatesTania Vergara Dance-Theater, a Sarasota-based company that represents the rebirth of Cuba’s first contemporary ballet company, will premiere “HuMangrove” on Saturday, April 25 at Sarasota Contemporary Dance, 1400 Blvd. of the Arts, 3PM and 7 PM.
HuMangrove is a contemporary dance piece inspired by the metaphor of the mangrove root—resilient, intertwined, and essential for sustaining life along the shore. The work celebrates the mangrove in dance, music, and poetry by famed Florida conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, illuminated by projections of the mangrove paintings of Guillermo López González. The dance explores how human beings, like mangroves, are connected through visible and invisible networks of support, heritage, and memory. Through fluid, grounded movement and ensemble-driven choreography, HuMangrove reflects on our shared vulnerabilities and the strength that comes from community.
Under the direction of internationally recognized choreographer Tania Vergara Perez, the company brings together dancers from around the world to present original, collaborative works that combine classical technique, theatrical storytelling, and contemporary themes.
An earlier version of HuMangrove won the Audience Favorite award at the 2025 Squeaky Wheel Fringe Festival.
