The Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition oversees operations of a Sarasota treasure, the historic Leonard Reid House. It is Sarasota's first free standing African American arts, culture and history center. The 100-year old structure features exhibitions by African American visual artists; classes presented by professional teaching artists and is a performance venue for spoken word poets, dancers, authors and musicians. Guided tours are available hosted by griots knowledgeable about the Reid family's legacy. The center is a destination where thoughtful conversations are held about African American history. Partnerships with larger local arts organizations such as the John and Mable Ringling Museum, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the Sarasota Orchestra makes the arts accessible to all.
