SARASOTA, Fla. (November 26, 2013) – Visit Sarasota County (VSC) is excited to welcome to our destination the Canadian Chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW).  This professional association will hold their Annual Professional Development Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, Monday, December 2 through Thursday, December 5, 2013. This is the second time Sarasota has won the bid to host this prestigious group of travel writers. In May of 2012, VSC hosted the Atlantic Caribbean Chapter (ACC) Annual Professional Development Meeting.

During the time in our destination, the group of nearly 40 attendees will be experience many of the restaurants, attractions and places that make Sarasota County one-of-a-kind.  While part of their day will consist of professional development programming, they will spend the rest of their time exploring our sands, touring our attractions, and sampling our culinary delights.  To assist VSC in hosting this group, many VSC partners have graciously agreed to educate, host and entertain.  From a Welcome Reception hosted by The Resort at Longboat Key Club, to a dine-around dinner at local restaurants and lunch at the Sarasota Opera House with area arts and cultural groups and a Closing Reception at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens catered by Michael’s on East, the destination is rolling out the red carpet. Further the group will take a wide variety of tours, such as kayaking through the mangrove tunnels, to bird watching in Myakka State Park and touring The Ringling.

Hosting travel writers is important for a destination as it allows writers to experience the destination and give a first-hand account of what there is to see and do in the destination.  These stories then in turn print in various magazines, newspapers, and online media outlets for consumers to read.  Canada is a strong market for Florida and Sarasota County and hosting these writers will help us continue reaching this target market.

In addition to hosting these writers during their conference dates, VSC also offered a Post Trip opportunity for these writers to stay through Saturday.  Five writers have signed up and will stay at the Siesta Key Bungalows, and will experience a few days exploring Venice, Historic Spanish Point, Siesta Key Village, the Sarasota Orchestra and the Sarasota Farmer’s Market before departing mid-morning on Saturday, December 7.

VSC will work closely with the writers from this group, along with all of the writers they work with throughout the year, to generate positive stories about traveling to Sarasota County.
