Despite bad weather and cold temperatures, fishing action is still good when during times when the weather settles a bit. Captain Jim Klopfer and Rick Grassett out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters report so good action last week.

Captain Rick Grassett’s report

Anglers with Capt. Grassett caught and released sea trout and bluefish fly fishing in the Sarasota Bay the past week, even catching a legal-sized gag grouper on a fly.

Cool weather pushes larger trout into skinny water, and as a result, Capt. Grassett and Longboat Key snowbird Nick Reding were able to wade in the bay and have some success last Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, anglers with the captain caught trout, jacks and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies with sink tip fly lines on the eastern deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay.

Captain Jim Klopfer’s report

Capt. Klopfer reports that weather was a factor this past week, as it usually is in January. Even in Florida, cold weather affects fish behavior. However, anglers still had success in Sarasota Bay with his charter service. Artificial and live bait caught fish on flats and around oyster bars.

Sea bass, bluefish, speckled trout, pompano, snapper, gag grouper, jack crevelle and more were caught once weather warmed up a bit in the late morning and early afternoon. A lot of lady fish were caught throughout the week as well, providing some fun action on the other end of the line.
