Sarasota Contemporary Dance is Sarasota's foremost professional contemporary dance company. The company's goal is to engage the community with contemporary dance through performance, education and collaboration. Fuzi—n "fuses" various dance styles Ð traditional, modern dance, Middle Eastern, Afro-modern and technologically-infused work-to create innovative choreography that challenges and inspires each audience member. The company's collaborative performances with artists of various genres have included Sarasota's Season of Sculpture; the Salvador Dali Museum, Art Center of Sarasota and Jazz Juvenocracy, including a performance at St. Petersburg's Palladium Theater. Fuzi—n's choreography and dancers have been presented at the Alabama Ballet Center for Dance, South Carolina Contemporary Dance Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center, Merce Cunning Studio Theatre and the Ailey City Group Theatre. Fuzi—n's educational outreach complements performances with its teaching artists working year-round, offering diverse school performances, residencies and weekly dance classes. Company members engage in the healing aspects of dance at Dance for Parkinson's with live drumming at Sarasota's Parkinson Place. Fuzi—n was first formed in 2002 by Leymis Bola–os Wilmott and Rachel Inman, both graduates of FSU's graduate dance program. Bola–os Wilmott received the esteemed Dance Magazine award for Best Choreographer in the Southeast, was one of the 28 "Most Powerful People in the Arts" by Sarasota Magazine, and was one of five choreographers chosen to participate in the Choreographer Intensive at Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival.
